Justice in Aging Welcomes Vanessa Barrington as New Communications Director

OAKLAND, CA – Vanessa Barrington has joined the National Senior Citizens Law Center (NSCLC) as its new Communications Director and will be working out of the organization’s Oakland, CA office.

NSCLC, which also has offices in Los Angeles, CA and Washington, DC, is a national advocacy organization that protects the rights of low-income older adults to quality health care and economic security.

Barrington comes to NSCLC with a strong background in editorial strategy, public relations, branding, marketing, and fundraising communications. She brings over a decade of experience in advocacy communications, and has worked on a diverse set of issues including food production, healthy food access, labeling, agriculture, and the environment.

Most recently she led the editorial and public relations strategy for Save the Bay, the leading regional organization working to protect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay.

“The issue of senior poverty is one that I connect with personally,” said Barrington. I am thrilled to be working with an organization that is so well known and highly respected in the advocacy community. As the population of poor seniors grows in number and need, we must inspire more Americans to connect with this issue through our communications efforts.”

As NSCLC’s communications director, she will be responsible for strategic and development communications, media relations, advocacy campaigns, and publications management. She will work closely with the organization’s leadership on a comprehensive rebranding effort set to start this fall.

“We are pleased and excited to have Vanessa on board,” said Executive Director Kevin Prindiville. “A major part of her job will be helping us educate a wider public about the seriousness of senior poverty in America and how it affects individuals and their rights.”

Barrington is a graduate of San Francisco State University where she received her Bachelor’s in business administration and marketing. She replaces Scott Parkin who is retiring after four years serving as the 42-year old non-profit’s first communications director.

She can be reached at (510) 256-1200 or vbarrington@nsclc.org.
