SSA Warns of E-mail Scam Targeting Beneficiaries

Read about an e-mail phishing scam that targets SSA beneficiaries.

The Social Security Administration warned this week of a fraudulent e-mail message purporting to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) which advises people of the 2007 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) and requesting that they update their personal information on a bogus SSA website in order to avoid suspension.  Individuals who have received such a message are advised to inform the SSA Office of Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 (TTY 1-866-501-2101).

Consumers should be aware that any e-mail request for personal information purporting to be from SSA is definitely fraudulent since SSA never requests personal information in such a manner.  SSA has also issued an Emergency Message for advocates that describes this incident: EM-06081, “Cost of Living eMail Phishing Scam” (Nov. 7, 2006).

Read a press release from SSA about the scam.
