Accomplishments

Sub-Sections

What are the biggest accomplishments of the National Senior Citizens Law Center?

NSCLC has preserved health care and won hundreds of millions of dollars in benefits and services for millions of elderly and disabled people.

  • NSCLC played a key role in the creation of the Nursing Home Reform Act, which protects nursing home residents from abuse and neglect.
  • NSCLC streamlined government procedures for Medicaid coverage so that newly disabled people could enroll more quickly.
  • NSCLC won the first successful class-action lawsuit against a federal agency for age discrimination.  The US Agency for International Development sought to reduce its payroll by selectively laying off its most senior staff.
  • NSCLC won reinstatement of benefits for more than 3,300 nursing home residents in Kentucky.
  • NSCLC stopped the state of Mississippi from jumping the gun and cutting off Medicaid prescription drug benefits to more than 50,000 elderly and disabled people before Medicare Part D coverage began.
  • NSCLC helped to stop the closing of a nationally renowned rehabilitation hospital in California.
  • NSCLC helped to overturn a policy in San Francisco that, in effect, sent all people needing long-term skilled nursing care to a single large facility rather than offer community-based care for those who could still manage somewhat on their own.
